Three races, two days, one great weekend: the ACT & NSW MTBO Championships

A wrap-up of the Middle, Sprint and Long at Mogo and Tomakin. 100 riders, 1,904 live radio punches, and a first for meshO at the finish line.

What a weekend. The ACT & NSW Mountain Bike Orienteering Championships carnival packed three state championship races into two days on the NSW South Coast, and we had a ball being part of it.

  • Middle, Saturday morning, on the Mogo Village MTB Trails
  • Sprint, Saturday afternoon, on the trails at Tomakin
  • Long, Sunday, in Mogo State Forest

The weekend in numbers

  • 3 state championship races
  • 100 riders from 29 clubs in Australia and New Zealand
  • 281 starts, and 83 riders entered all three races
  • 93 controls, 15 of them radio controls
  • 1,904 radio punches sent live from the course to the arena

What meshO ran

meshO ran the event technology for all three races:

  • Radio controls. Splits came in live from out on the course.
  • Timing.
  • The kiosk, where riders looked up their own results.
  • Live results, on the arena screen and on phones.
  • The network linking the course and the arena.
  • Power for everything in the arena.
  • Self download.

Self download was a first for meshO, and it may well be a first in Australia. At the finish, riders downloaded their own cards at the table with no queue and no download tent, and rode off with their splits printed in hand. A few minutes later they were back at the results screen arguing about route choices.

Everything ran smoothly across all three races. Radio punches came in all weekend, results were up seconds after each rider finished, and the arena stayed powered and connected from the first start to the last finisher. That left us free to enjoy the racing, which was the best part.

Results

Timothy Farrant and Marquita Gelderman (North West) won M21 and W21 in both the Middle and the Long. Ricky Thackray (Bibbulmun Orienteers) and Maya Bennette (Yarra Valley Orienteering Club) took the Sprint. Presley Scouller-Evans (Newcastle) won M20 in all three races. In M80 and W80, Leigh Privett and Ann Ingwersen rode all three races too.

Full results and splits for every race are on events.mesho.live:

There’s more from each day in our earlier posts: the Middle at Mogo Trails, the Sprint at Tomakin and the run-in at the Long.

Thank you

Thank you to the organisers who planned the carnival, set the courses and found three great venues. MTBO Australia and Orienteering ACT, that includes you. Thank you to the volunteers who staffed the starts, finishes and arenas all weekend. And thank you to every rider who came, from M12 to M80 and from both sides of the Tasman. You made it a weekend to remember, and we can’t wait for the next one.
